Sociality - An Analysis

Celestial Sociality

A celestial sociality is as the glory of the sun, so bright is it above lesser sociality. Those in celestial sociality accepted Jesus Christ, either in this world or in the world to come, and spent their lives in a state of discomfort with the world. They were valiant because they wanted to change the fallen world for the better. They were not content to see pain and lack in the world but reached out with their means to comfort and elevate. They are comfortable around those who desire righteousness. A celestial person is comfortable with innocent children and finds joy in their very existence.

A celestial person feels distinctly uncomfortable when they make mistakes (called guilt) but they learn to accept their own failings by complete reliance on the atonement of Jesus Christ, knowing that He washes them and makes them clean (repentance). In other words, He makes us comfortable in the presence of the Gods. Importantly, note that it's not lack of sin that makes a person celestial. It's nurturing the desire to be comfortable with celestial people. We have all made terrestrial and telestial mistakes. (If you've lied even once, you've committed a telestial mistake.) We've had times where we were more comfortable with terrestrial or even telestial company. But, something worked in us (and will have to work in us again and again) that made those lesser spheres uncomfortable. Celestial people feel an itch that only repentance can scratch. Celestial sociality isn't a group of people who never made mistakes. It is a group of people who truly, deeply desire to raise each other up. (Be careful of anxiety and depression - they muddy your real desires. Don't trust those two liars. They are never right about you. Note how you feel when chemically balanced, not having medical trauma.)

Amazingly, we are invited to interact socially with three celestial beings as often as we can. Prayer is celestial socialization. You are speaking to God the Father in the name of God the Son and receive witnesses and power from God the Testator. Prayer isn't a commandment because They need us. It is a commandment because we need to learn to become comfortable with Them. Prayer is tapping into a celestial sociality to charge our spiritual batteries before going into the telestial world. Scripture study is how we receive messages back from them with tips on how to improve. Service is how we show to ourselves that we are becoming like them. We are then given great power and limitless grace. We seek not the power for ourselves but to lift others. We develop the grace because we want to extend it to others. We are valiant in that we have the option of abusing power but use it instead for the ennobling of all.

Terrestrial Sociality

A terrestrial sociality is so much more glorious than the telestial that it is as the moon above the stars in glory, yet it pales in comparison to celestial. These are honorable men, blinded by the craftiness of men. They are not valiant. They are comfortable among those who just want to exist. They don't dominate others but nor do they reach out to serve and uplift. They desire good, but not at the expense of effort. They are those who are comfortable with the "good enough." They do not desire to rule and control, but nor do they desire to serve and create. Existence is sufficient, and they will be happy with just being. They will not have joy and glory in eternal increase and expansion, but they will be comfortable in their steady, unchanging lives. They are not trusted with great power and grace, nor would they want it.

Telestial Sociality

A telestial sociality is reserved for those who don't embrace the gospel of Christ in this life or in the life to come. They love lies and secret combinations to get gain. They seek to elevate themselves above others at any expense. What's interesting is that they will still, eventually, be happy. Once they have paid for their sins, they will inherit the Telestial Kingdom where they will dwell in a state of glory that is compared to the stars in the sky in brilliance. Who will be there? Those that are comfortable with the telestial things of the world. Those who glory in violence, in sexual deviancy, in deception, and in domination of others. They are comfortable with each other because they know that they are alike.

What of someone who was led into a life like this by others? Who did these things because that's what they were taught? The question isn't the actions. The question is the heart. Do they glory in it? Do they seek to embrace it further? Or are they disgusted by it and make effort to change it. Perhaps they are in a gang and are taught to hate their "enemy," but they have doubts and question the extremes of violence and other domination tactics. Are they telestial? Are they comfortable in their society or are they looking for how to get out of it? That's the question. It's not the magnitude of your sins, because all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. It's the desires of your heart. Will a man who is exposed to porn at 6-years old be judged for his porn addiction? No. That was not his fault. He is, however, self-selecting his sociality by whether he tries to escape. Does he continue to embrace it, begin to revel in it, and find darker and more sinister levels of it? Or does he despair of the addiction and reach out for help when it is offered? Is he comfortable with the lifestyle or does it fill him with disgust and he seeks to change?

We will be surprised how many "wicked" people were ignorantly or innocently forced into what we call "sin" but desired to change and join the sociality of the good. We will be even more surprised when some who appeared to follow the outward forms of religion finally admit they are uncomfortable with the sociality of the saints all along.

Outer Darkness

Some people cannot be trusted with any power. They were so selfish and proud that their progress ended at a spirit body. They desired to dominate and control others to the point that the only thing to do was to cut off their progress. Are they still human? Yes, but they have none that trust them and no grace given. They are damned eternally to spirit bodies. They are Satan and his followers who were cast from heaven (plus those in outer darkness who maintain their bodies and are miserable, but they are a rare and unimportant group).

Plain City - 1913

[Author's note - This is historical fiction. While no record of this scene exists (as no writings by Clarence, William or Eliza regarding this time are known), I have developed this short story based upon the records I do have, combined with impressions from discussions with Clarence's son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren. The framework is based on facts, available upon request.]

Clarence Coy (circa 1915 to 1920)
Clarence was not happy. He didn't know what he was feeling. But Ma and Pa had been fighting a lot lately, and it left his insides all tangled up. This was worse than ever, though. He hadn't seen Pa since the last fight. That'd been weeks ago. He'd disappeared for days, and even a week before, but never this long. Clarence was nearly 16 years-old, and being number 5 out of 10 kids meant you were lucky to get noticed. Especially with the fights... But pa had always noticed him.

He realized that what he felt most was annoyance. He was annoyed at his ma and pa. He was annoyed at the way they treated each other and the kids. So, it was with a sour face that Clarence walked into the kitchen.

"Clarence, I'm glad you're here," his mother said, trembling a bit as she spoke. She was wringing her hands. He'd never seen her ring her hands like that. "I have some news. I didn't want to tell any of you kids, but you're going to hear about it from someone sooner or later. It's in the newspapers and everything... Better you hear it from me than from someone in the neighborhood." She began to cry.

Clarence walked over to her. He'd seen his ma cry before, but never with this kind of look on her face. "Ma, what is it?" Then he knew. It was about his pa. All annoyance forgotten, he asked carefully, "Ma, is this about where pa is?"
William Henry Coy (circa 1930's)

His insight seemed to bolster her. She replied, "Yes, Clarence, it is. I don't think there's any way to say this nicely, so I'll just say it. Your pa left town after our last fight. It seems he left with Widow Cottle. The sheriff thinks he's found him in Florida. They're going to try to bring him home, but it's not looking good."

He interrupted with a quiet question, "Ma - are you saying dad ran off with Mary Cottle, the old lady who lives just down the street?"
Eliza J. Dallin Coy (circa 1920's)

It was a sign of her distress that his ma didn't correct his impolite speech about a grown-up. She just broke down crying, nodding her head. Clarence had thought himself annoyed before. But the frustration, annoyance, hurt and shock just welled up and congealed into a ball of bitter loathing stronger than anything he'd ever felt before. He had loved his dad. He'd defended him to the other kids when ma and pa fought. He'd tried to give him the benefit of the doubt. But his trust and hope were shattered, and all the love he'd felt burned away and fueled the already raging anger until it threatened to burst forth.

But he loved his ma, and he didn't want to rage at her. So, he swallowed that bitterness and placed it deep inside his heart. Even as he comforted his mother, he vowed he would never speak his pa's name, ever again.

Who am I?

"Do you hear the people sing, singing the song of angry birds," said my dear little Tigerlily. Almost 6 years old but already coming up with silly lyrics. I'm so proud. All of my kids loved Les Miserables. And yes, we skipped the Fantine descending into destitution and horror, and the Thenardiers, who are disgusting. Oh, and Javert's suicide, because - yuck. I don't need to see and HEAR it.

What I Learned from a Visit to the Wild West, or Time Travel Made Easy

I am recovering from a stint in the Wild West, otherwise known as Port Harcourt, Nigeria. It was a beautiful and dangerous place. Imagine if the United States had been cursed/blessed with modern transportation, guns, communication equipment and oil refineries for quick wealth acquisition. Now imagine that the mentality is a blend of medieval Islam, Wild West highway robbers, old school Born Again Christians, and modern online scammers. Congratulations, you're in Nigeria.
Driving to and from work in our convoy. Normal roads...

Not all Nigerians are so easily defined. There were wonderful, honest, good men that I met on my trip. Our client was blessed with some amazing employees. People I would hire here and have confidence the job would be done right. Our driver was early every time. Our meetings started on time. They got us the information requested early and thoroughly. They were great to work with and I enjoyed my time there.

And Nigeria's rampant corruption has been greatly changed in the last few years. My co-workers had to pay exorbitant 'fees' to everyone they met to get in and out of the country, through every line, and past every agent.  Slipping dollars and five dollars freely was just how it was. However, this trip was different - I was never even ASKED for a bribe. Not a soul. Not one agent in one department from landing to departure asked me for 'grease' or turned their palm towards me with hints and threats. No, excluding the rather aggressively thorough pat downs (wow, thanks for the massage, Sergeant, but I didn't ask for a prostate exam with my pat down) I might have been in the U.S.  Okay, we don't have quite THAT many military men wandering the airport. And generally we have lines, not packs of semi-organized chaos. But seriously, I never felt fearful for my safety, for my property or for my sanity.

So, I learned that a leader of a nation who says he will fight corruption and who DOES, can change a whole culture. Now, the internal corruption of the nation still has a long ways to go, according to those who live there, but one international traveler was well pleased with the results.

The lead truck's driver and passengers
Now, is Nigeria ready for an influx of tourists? Should you trust Prince Heyowana with your $10K bank transaction? Nah, there will always be scams and dangers. Seriously - I was in a military convoy for my travels! Don't take a place like this lightly! But, if they can take steps in the right direction, then so can we. Can we fight down the culture of corruption rampant in Washington and too many state houses and city halls in this nation? Yes. But will we? That remains to be seen. I will never run for elected office as a mayor, governor or president. But I think I may enjoy working as an auditor or ethics investigator. "I seek not for power, but to pull it down." I like that...
